How to Prepare for a Successful Family Photoshoot
Family photoshoots can be exciting and stressful. From shifting weather to wardrobe decisions, family photos have a lot of moving parts. There are a few things you can do to prepare for a successful family photoshoot.
What Does a Successful Photoshoot Look Like?
First and foremost, we need to define “successful.” Successful does not mean posed and perfect. Successful does not mean well-behaved or obedient children. Successful does not mean ideal weather or crisp button down shirts that don’t get rumpled.
Successful means authentic, honest, and representative of your family. Successful means your family is documented exactly as they are–silly or sullen, messy or shy. It means the images capture your family’s unique relationships, deep love, and sometimes, even a little bit of chaos. From dirt smudged knees, messy hair, or cranky toddlers, a successful photoshoot will give you the photos you hoped for, the photos you never expected, and all the moments in between.
Planning Your Family Photoshoot Outfits
When choosing what to wear, focus on complimentary colors instead of identical outfits. Think about texture and fabric to add dimension. Many clients use Pinterest or Canva to brainstorm colors, pieces, and patterns that work well together without matching too closely. Perhaps start with one individual’s outfit that speaks to your intended style and build around that.
Many photographers offer suggestions for styles to explore when booking a themed or seasonal photoshoot. I personally do not give exact clothing suggestions or style guides because I believe your wardrobe choices are a reflection of your personality and family style. However, I am always open to chatting casually about outfit ideas if you’d like a second opinion.
Consider your photoshoot location when choosing your outfits, particularly footwear. Location and weather may limit your options. Lastly, I always suggest taking comfort into consideration when picking out your outfits. If you feel uncomfortable, it will show in the photos. And overall, if you’re unsure of a particular item, bring additional clothing to swap out throughout the photoshoot.
Using Snacks as Family Photoshoot Incentives
Before your family photoshoot, plan to have a meal or snack to keep away the hanger. If your photoshoot falls between meals, bring snacks! Snack breaks are a perfect way to keep little ones (and big ones) engaged and fueled for the duration of a photoshoot. Depending on your family’s schedule, planning a sweet treat post-photos can provide incentive throughout the shoot and give everyone something to look forward to.
Props to Bring to Your Family Photoshoot
Toys, blankets, accessories, and music speakers are all encouraged. If there is something that would make your family feel more comfortable, bring it! We can always leave things in the car or in a bag off to the side.
Typical props that my clients have brought include: a neutral colored blanket to lay on, a favorite toy to cuddle, a music playlist that gets everyone in a good mood, fairy wings for some imagination play, or a football to toss around.
Typical Questions I Get For Family Photoshoots
What if my kids won’t behave?
They probably won’t and that’s perfect! They do not need to act in any particular way. Let them be authentically themselves and I promise I’ll be able to capture their unique personalities through games, silly prompts, and more.
Are there any colors I should avoid for outfits?
You’ll never hear the words “don’t wear [insert item here]” from me. However, if you’re torn between a neon yellow shirt and a cozy green flannel, I know which one I might suggest.
What if the weather takes a turn?
I do not cancel or reschedule outdoor photoshoots unless the weather is dangerous or particularly nasty. New England weather can change in an instant, so I always try to stick with original dates and times as often as possible. If my clients want to reschedule due to weather or calendar conflicts, alternative days may be available, but options may be limited.
